Mike Wilkinson
Regional Sales AssociateWhat led you to work at eChalk?
I graduated from NYU in May of 2008 and had spent the preceding several months going on interview after interview. Like many people of my generation, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my future or what kind of career I was looking to pursue—until I walked across the street from my college dorm and into eChalk’s office. I was thrilled to learn that eChalk works with schools around the country to better the day-to-day lives of teachers, administrators and most importantly students, and the more I learned about eChalk the more excited I was to work in education. I guess you could say I was drawn to eChalk because it gave me not only a start to my career but also an opportunity to, in some small way, make a change for future generations.
Describe the eChalk culture.
When people ask what I do for a living, I always answer, “I am an Inside Sales rep,” and their response is usually something along the lines of “Oh…so you’re a telemarketer?”
Now, I am not going to lie, in my sales background I have had several jobs where I have felt just like a telemarketer, a nameless voice on the phone interrupting people at work, but at eChalk I have never once felt that way. This is most definitely because eChalk is an extremely welcoming place where everyone works hard, it’s a company that encourages people to be their best and truly believes that what eChalkers do on a day-to-day basis will have a positive affect on schools around the country. The enthusiastic and encouraging camaraderie at eChalk not only helps me to be the best I can be at my job, but also has created an atmosphere and culture unlike any job I have ever had—one where I feel like I am at home surrounded by friends.
What do you like best about working at eChalk?
My favorite thing about working at eChalk is that I have an opportunity to learn so much about education. Before starting at eChalk two years ago, I had no idea how complex the education process is or how hard educators work—and this has given me a truly great appreciation for all of the educators I had growing up.
How would you describe eChalk customers?
AWESOME PEOPLE!
Describe your fellow eChalkers.
As anyone who works in K-12 will tell you, it can be a frustrating field to work in. Constantly changing standards, expectations, politics and budgets can make someone who is getting their feet wet in this market not want to ever dive in—it would be simpler to work in the world of business-to-business—but the people at eChalk are not like that. We are ready for, and love, the challenge that working in K-12 presents because we know that navigating around the obstacles we come across will be worth it. It is this can-do attitude that unites my friends, the eChalkers.
Is there one event that stands out during the time you’ve worked at eChalk?
As an Inside Sales rep 99.9% of my job is done over the phone, sitting at my desk, so I was thrilled last summer when I got to attend the NECC conference in Washington, DC. It was at this conference that I got to meet face-to-face with educators to whom I had sold eChalk—and that was thrilling to me. Getting to put faces with the names and voices I knew so well was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
How do you describe eChalk to your friends and family?
I usually start my description of eChalk by saying, “We build websites for schools around the country.” This is greeted by a polite nod, at which point I add on, “…websites with online classes, announcements and more great stuff integrated into them—really helping to connect entire school communities through the power of the Internet!” At this point, my friend or family member will say, “That’s awesome, you sound like such a salesman.” And that, dear readers, is an amazing compliment.
What excites you about the future of eChalk?
I’m a people person, so what I am most excited about at eChalk is getting to call more potential customers and getting to know them—and also, of course, spreading the word about how awesome eChalk is.
