Torrance brings years of experience developing, marketing and implementing web-based businesses, as well as creating and implementing technology solutions in K-12 schools and districts. At Jumbo.com (now Jupiter Media), Torrance created and launched the education channel Homeworkcentral.com and the Business and Finance Channel. In 1997, he was recruited to help develop Bloomberg.com, where he worked for two years before co-founding eChalk in 1999. Torrance was the Founder and Chairman of the Board of NYConnects (1994-2000), a nonprofit organization that helped connect more than 100 New York schools to the Internet. He is a Term Member on the Council of Foreign Relations and a member of the Board of Directors of the Citizens Union.

Torrance is a graduate of Haverford College.

Why did you choose to work in education?

I founded eChalk because I believe education is the most important investment that we, as a society, can make as an investment in our future stability, security and progress of our country. I also believe that the most valuable and under-leveraged resource in K-12 education is the people. By creating a safe and secure platform that enables people to find each other and collaborate together to take on the issues facing education, I believe that you will have systemic, if not revolutionary, change in the way we educate and learn.

How is eChalk different from other places you’ve worked?

Most companies view their success in how they do. eChalk views our success in how our clients do.

What do you like best about working at eChalk?

The most valuable resource eChalk has is its people. We have the very best.

What excites you about the future of eChalk?

For me it is living the original vision of the company—reconnecting the connected community and creating a marketplace for our schools online.

“I can work with my lab partners on eChalk discussions in the evenings—and if we get stuck we email our teacher for help!”
