Why did you choose to work in education?
An education executive once asked me, “Now that you’ve been very successful in business, do you want to be significant?” That question caused me to pause and reflect on the importance of helping to drive American education toward effective lifelong learning. eChalk is central to the mission of U.S. education.
Tell us about the eChalk culture.
The eChalk culture is very entrepreneurial—full of passion, hard work and driven to make a difference in education. The best part of eChalk is its people. They’re very dedicated professionals and passionate about helping schools succeed. They’re serious in their work and, at the same time, they know how to laugh. They motivate me to accomplish more.
What excites you about the future of eChalk?
In order to compete globally, the United States needs to provide a learning environment that exists more than 180 days per year and 7 hours a day, since other countries have kids in school for 270 days each year. In order to extend the learning day, we need to “think beyond the building” because we won’t give our children the learning they need to compete globally within the context of the school building alone. Thousands of schools around the country are doing just that with eChalk—they’re avidly using the applications we provide and it’s satisfying to see that they’re achieving positive results.
